INTRODUCTION

Bachelor of Food Science (Food Service and Nutrition) is the first program offered by the School of Food Science and Technology (PPSTM), UMT. This program was offered since May Session 2000/2001. It is one of the most popular study programs at UMT. This program has been recognized by the Public Service Department (JPA) on October 29, 2003 and subsequently recognized in the list of Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The program applies knowledge and skills in the field of food science generally in terms of composition and nutritional value of  food,  the legislation  of food safety, as well as the analysis of food and product development. This degree provides added value to the students in terms of knowledge, skills and management required in commercial food service industry that is increasingly emphasizing on the provision of safe, healthy and high quality food. The program also provides students with expertise in advising on the intake of ideal amount of food and its relation to health to the community.


ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Minimum Qualifications Diploma / Equivalent

General University Requirements

Passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / equivalent to  credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melayu Honours / Bahasa Malaysia July Paper ;

and
possessed a diploma or other qualification recognized by the Malaysian Government and approved by the Senate; 
or
Pass STPM in 2012 or earlier with at least: 
• Grade C (2.00) in subjects General Studies; 
and 
• Grade C (2.00) in two (2) other subjects;

or

Pass  the Matriculation in 2012 or earlier with a minimum  of CGPA of 2.00 ;

and
Obtain at least Level 1 (Band 1) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM

For candidates STPM / Matriculation in 2012 or earlier: 
Obtain at least  Grade C (2.00)  in the following subject: 
• Chemistry and Chemical Engineering


Minimum qualifications Matriculation / Foundation

General University Requirements

Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / equivalent with credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia or credit in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia July Paper;

Pass Matriculation / UM Science Foundation / UiTM Foundation with at least  a CGPA of 2.00 ; 
and
Obtain at least Level 1 (Band 1) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM

Obtain at least  Grade C (2.00)  at the Matriculation / Foundation level in the following subject:
• Chemistry / Chemical Engineering


Minimum Qualifications for STPM

General University Requirements

Passes Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / equivalent with credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia or credit in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia July Paper.

and
Pass Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) with at least:

  • Grade C (2.00) in General Studies; 
    and
    •  Grade C (2.00) in two (2) other subjects. 
    and
    Obtained at least Level 1 (Band 1) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM

Obtained at least  Grade C (CGPA 2.00)  at STPM level in the following subject: 
• Chemistry and Chemical Engineering


Duration Fees and Total Credit Hours

Duration – 4 years

Local Student Fees / Semester (RM) 980.00

International Student Fees / Semester (RM) 2300.00

Total credit hours –  140

♦ Fees shown are excluding hostel fees (accommodation) and Non-Recurring Fees.

♦ Non-Recurring Fees (paid only one time in the first half) – RM450.00

♦ Hostel fee (per semseter and per student). There are three types of packages  being offered:

  • 4 persons per room – RM 357.00 / semester / student
  • 3 persons per room – RM 476.00 / semester / student
  • 2 persons per room – RM 595.00 / semester / student

Non-Recurring Fees

Registration 100.00

Orientation week 200.00

Extra-curricular activities 150.00

TOTAL 450.00

Graduates of this program are qualified to hold the following positions;

  1. Science Officer
  2. Food Preparation Officer
  3. Research and Development Officer
  4. Food Analysts
  5. Academic Officer (Lecturer and Director of Higher Education)
  6. Administrative Officer

Especially in the private agencies that include hospitals and health care centers, commercial food service industry (restaurants, hotels, aviation agencies, military agencies and so on) and also the food production industry.

 

Apart from the positions listed above, graduates of this program also qualified to hold the following positions;

  1. Nutrition Officer
  2. Community Health Officer
  3. Customer Service Officer (Food and Products)
  4. Consultant Health / Food
  5. Food Service Executives
  6. Security Officer / Quality Control Food

Apart from career opportunities mentioned above, graduates of this program can also seeks to become entrepreneurs in the food production industry as well as the commercial food service industry.
